Alexander Smith was a Clothier in Shotts and was a well known Poet who had his Poems published in the Shotts Advertiser andthe Glasgow Observer. Alexander was born in Eckeheim, Shotts in 1863 and Died 23.5.1926 at Shotts and is buried in Calderhead Cemetery.

His prize poem 'The Pearl Diver" (on a Statuette), other poems among many were "The Feast of Cherries" and "To Walt whitman".

Alexander was the Vice President of shotts Y>M>C>A, and President of Stane congregation and Church.

Someone wrote of Alexander as a "cutter of clothes and of Polisher Prose".

He had a builder build his Duplex where the family lived upstairs on top of the shop which was located in Station Road.  A Herbalist worked in the adjacent Duplex.  The building is still there but is now a Bottle shop - named "Beer World".

Alexander married a German lady called Bertha Busshart, Bertha worked in the Fever Hospital in Shotts as a cook under Matron Hoffnung.  They had three Daughters, Jeannie Louise Pyott Smith, Camille Isabella Smith, Caroline (known as Carrie) Smith.  Camille attended Hamilton Academy in Scotland and became a Primary School Teacher in Sydney.  She also studied for a Diploma in Art and became an Art Lecturer at Newcastle Teachers College, in N.s.w Australia.

Jeannie was a Milliner in Hamilton and worked for a Miss Sample before coming out to Australia in 1930, she then taught Millinery at night classes in Sydney before she was married.

Carrie was a Piano Teacher in Shotts, but helped her Mother Bertha do domestic work when they arrived in Sydney, Australia.

Bertha on becoming a Widow, brought her three Daughters to australia in 1930.   Camille and Carrie never married.

Jeannie Louise Pyott Smith B 22.6.1906 in Shotts, married a Henry Sinclair B19.1.1912 Shotts.  They were married in Sydney Australia in 1937.  Jeannie passed away at the age of 97 years in November, 2003 Sydney Australia and her Husband Henry passed away in December 1994, Caringbah, Sydney at the age of 82 years.

Henry Sinclair's parents were, Henry Sinclair B 8.4. 1882 passing away in Australia 8.9.1968 in Swansea, nsw  Australia.  His Mother Joan Kennedy Thomson B28.10.1878 Scotland, passing away in Australia 21.12.1953 at Swansea nsw.

Henry Sinclair B 1912, Great Grandfather another Henry B 28.6.1824 Shotts, was a Contract Miner somewhere in Shotts, his Son Henry B1882 worked for him in the Mine which he did not like so her  ran away and joined the Army but he was underage, so his Father brought him back to shotts in 1897, he then joined the 'highland light Infantry' in 16.8.1900 and after 12 years with the H.L. Infantry returned to Shotts and worked in the Mine until 1914 when he was posted to France in 9.8.1914 and discharged in 1918.

He married Joan Kennedy Thomson B 28.10.1878 in Scotland.  Her family owned Monkland Forge at Monkland Glen.  Joan passed away in Swansea 21.12.1953  Australia.

Their children were Margaret, Jane, Henry and Joan who were all born in Shotts.  They all came out to Australia in 1920, Joan was the baby of the family and was only one year old when they came to Australia.

Now the Smiths and Sinclair's knew one another in Shotts as they had an Aunt and Uncle in Common.

Henry and Jeannie Sinclair had three Sons all born in sydney, Allan, Harry and John (my better half) and they all worked together with their Father in the family business which their Father started in 1953 in Kogarah, Sydney.  The business was named 'Caravan Accessories' and it was very successful.

The three Sons are all retired and are living in Sydney, along with their families.

Note

I can add something to this.

Between being a Herbalist and an off sales shop, the building was used as a cafe and
was always referred to as ' Restu ' (Rest you) The spelling I am unsure of.
