The Congregational Church

The first Congregational Chapel was erected in 1844 to serve the people of Stane. It was a barn built at Stane Farm, then in November 1844 they moved to Mansfield. Garden Park at the inside end of Manse Road was used until 1908.

A former minister Mr. Gilchrist once compared Stane to Bethany who said, “It lay like a few pebbles in a goblet of emerald.” These first houses were of small ‘but and ben’ design, had thatched roofs and the outside walls were whitewashed. The area was surrounded by green fields. They stood on the right hand side of the present Main Street.

The Congregational Church celebrated its 150 years of service to Shotts from 1844

A memorial stone can be seen high on the side above the main entrance which states that it was laid by Rev, Sholto D.C. Douglas on 12th October 1907 and it was 1908 when it moved to its present building at Stane Corner. This church was one of the first in the district to have a female minister, her name was Rev. Nancy Ward she served Shotts from 1948 until 1953. Rev. George Porter took over in 1953 until he retired in 1989. He was followed by another lady called Rev. Delia O’Halloran who left in 1994.
