St. Patrick's R.C. Church

|
On
the left side of Bridge Place the remains of the first Catholic Church
can still be seen today. It was opened on 20th September 1868. It was
Gothic in style, with a belfry and porch. It was not until December 1870
that Shotts became a separate mission and 1872 before St. Patrick was
mentioned as patron for the first time. The centenary mass was
celebrated on 20th October 1968 by the Rt. Rev. Francis Thomson, Bishop
of Motherwell.
St.
Patrick’s new Church was built in record time (so they said) the first
sod being cut
on 17th March 1904 and the first service was celebrated at the opening
on Sunday 26th November 1905. A report published in the “Wishaw
Press” on the week ending 24th September 1904 stated that the
estimated cost would exceed £6000. It can seat
600
people. The stone used in its construction was obtained from Braehead
Quarries, Fauldhouse. The base for the car park came from the demolition
of the houses in High Street, Gray Street and Jordan Terrace. (Centenary
