William signed up with the Gordon Highlanders in 1941 (regular army) 7 years service, 5 years reserve. He served in France and the Middle East.

When the Korean War broke out in 1950, he was re-called and posted to the
Royal Ulster Rifles. On 4th January 1951.
His wife received a telegram, missing – presumed dead.
For 3 years he was held prisoner in North Korea, released in
1953 and de-mobbed in Ireland 1953.
